Ice cream (it. gelato) is the most delicious Italian dessert. All Trieste ice cream shops (it. gelateria) offer great variety of flavors: from classical ones, like chocolate, strawberry, nuts to very sophisticated – horseradish or stracciatella with truffle flavor. Everybody can find something according to its preferences 🙂
I like a lot gelato 🙂 Having visited many ice cream bars in Trieste, I’d like to share with you three of my favorite. You can try there not only good ice cream, but also famous granita – semi frozen dessert typically based on fruit juice.
- Coppetta o Cono? Entering to any gelateria the first question you will hear: “coppetta o cono?”. It means: would you prefer to have ice cream in paper / plastic cup (it. coppetta) or cone (it. cono)
- What is “pallina”. Ordering ice cream in Trieste it is common to use word “pallina” – eng. scoop of ice cream. To try different tastes you can order two “pallina”, but worth to mention the size of “pallina” in Trieste is quite big. Therefore, if you worry about your figure, but want to try different tastes, it is always possible to ask one “pallina”, but composed of two different flavors 🙂
- Average price for one scoop of ice cream in Trieste is 1,30 – 1,40 Euro
Now, you just need to choose gelateria 🙂
There are many bars offering good ice cream in Trieste.
Located not far from Central railway station, this gelateria can become a good place for the first encounter with Trieste, especially if you have arrived in a hot summer day 🙂 You will find this bar in Via Carlo Ghega, 10.
Zampolli is famous for its enormous choice of ice cream: !
Here you can find all fruit tastes, all variation of chocolate, tastes of world famous desserts like Sacher and cheesecake. I personally like “ricotta with pistacchio” and “cinnamon with plums”. Classical chocolate also never disappoints. The only problem is to choose 🙂 Sometimes it takes time to decide, but people working there are very understanding and friendly 🙂
Another reason why I like Zampolli is its granitas – semi frozen dessert typically based on fruit juice. Certainly, you will appreciate this dessert in a summer period. The bar offers different flavors, including nuts and coffee ones, but in most cases, I choose orange or lemon granita. They are very refreshing 🙂
La Siciliana is located in the center of the city, in a famous pedestrian street Viale XX Settembre (Viale XX Settembre, 10). It is nice shadow street where a lot of bars and restaurants are located. The street is especially attractive in spring – summer time, when you can seat in the shade of trees and drink Aperol Spritz or eat gelato 🙂
There are many ice cream bars in Viale XX Settembre, and I think you can drop in any: ice cream will be good 🙂 We prefer La Siciliana because flavors they offer are very saturated. Even more, they like to experiment with ice cream, offering new tastes, like passion fruit or lime with basil.
Variety of tastes is less in comparison with Zampolli, but it can be an advantage for those who (like me) has difficulties to choose 🙂
Their milkshakes are also worth to try 🙂 In case if you will want to taste it, bear in mind that in Trieste milkshake is called Frappè.
And the last thing. La Siciliana is also pasticceria with a good offer of traditional Italian desserts and coffee 🙂
The third gelateria I’d like to advice for visiting is Oggi, located in Via Cesare Battisti, 13 (the street parallel to Viale XX Settembre).
I have to confess this is my favorite gelateria. It is positioned as workshop of ice cream, and indeed their team is very creative and meticulous in everything. They use natural ingredients, the list of which is possible to see on the official Oggi website. Probably that’s why their ice cream is so tasty and special.
I should mention that price here is higher than average in Trieste: 2 Euro for one scoop of ice cream, but it is totally justified.
Oggi offers different gelato tastes, but unlike with other ice cream shops, here they are not shown. You will see only these containers.
There is a wall with pictures of all flavors to help making a choice.
La note a Soho with white chocolate and hazelnut cream, Mela e Canela – fresh apple with cinnamon, Gianduia – cacao mixed with hazelnuts… and many other interesting flavors.
Oggi is also one of Trieste gelateria that offers vegan Ice cream.
I tried almost everything and all tastes are delicious. For sure, I would recommend to try Pistacchio Siciliano – this is one of Oggi bestsellers and it finishes quickly: a couple of times when I wanted to order it, I found the caption “Sold out” on the picture 🙁 Tiramisù and Melone (fresh melon) are also “must try” 🙂
I hope you found useful this post and wish you enjoy gelato while walking around Trieste or after a good dinner. Ice cream always keeps you in a good mood 🙂 All your comments and questions are very welcome.
