Today I would like to share with you hiking trail that is located in the province of Udine. The route lays across small townships and ruins of castles, some of them were built in 11th century.
: 8 – 9 hours, including the way from Trieste to Faedis (initial point of hiking) and back.
- Hiking boots
- Water and / or hot tea
This time I decided to make sandwiches from ciabatta, with cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. I also packed mandarins and nuts as a source of energy 🙂
- Download the map of Italy.
How to reach initial point of the route from Trieste.
You will need a car. Our task is to reach Estimated travel time from Trieste 1 hour, 15 minutes.
Having arrived in the town , right near the initial point of the route: parking is free and comfortable.
After changing the shoes, we were ready for hiking.
Part 1 of the Route. Castles.
The first part of the route is a bit tough, because it constantly rises up, but is beautiful at the same time: it is kind of stone stairs leading to ruins of Castello di Zucco (2) and small church Chiesetta di Madonna di Zucco that was built in the 16th century.
Having made some pictures and drunk water we continue to climb towards ruins of the castle Castello di Cucagna (3) – first half of the 11th century. Unfortunately, the castle was closed for restoration and we could see almost nothing.
The road passes through the forest, and it should be really nice in Spring – Summer season. We were making the route in winter, and the landscape was a bit sad. But we found a lot of birches, that is a unusual for our region.
Part 2. Porzus and small charming church.
Porzus is a small, almost uninhabited township. Based on official statistic of the town only a few dozen people live in it. You will not find here the restaurant or trattoria, but there is a bar where the owner kindly offered us to taste homemade wine 🙂
In Porzus we also made a stop to have our homemade lunch 🙂
Leaving Porzus we hike towards to (you should go in the direction of Clap).
Some interesting buildings you will find on your way: ruins of the house and right behind it the monument, devoted to the victims of two World wars.
And finally we reached I would say exactly this church – small and nonworking – I especially remembered. The church has very special energy.
End of the route and recommend places where to eat.
Having admired the church, we go down by the stone road, decorated by emerald green moss and dry leafs.
This trail goes over the asphalt road. – it is mini hotel and restaurant.
This time we haven’t visited it, and I can not share with you our impressions, but based on the information from Agritourism Farm official website, the restaurant offers dishes made from own production products, complemented by good wines. Sounds good 🙂 Especially if you are hungry 🙂
The ring (Anello means ring in Italian language) of the route closes up in , from where we return to the parking place.
And before coming back to Trieste we dropped at to drink a glass of beer and celebrate successfully completed trail 🙂 You can find here nice atmosphere and good choice of beer and wine.
