Today we chose hiking route located in the province of Udine – Monte Cuar. Route description was enticing, promising amazing views.
Having arrived at the initial hiking point, we realized that enjoying the views would be quite difficult. The day was cloudy and dense fog covered almost everything.
However, despite nasty weather, the nature along the route was beautiful, and we really enjoyed this walk. On the way back we visited San Daniele to taste its famous prosciutto 🙂
10 hours, incl. the way from Trieste to initial point of hiking and back.
- Hiking boots
- Bag lunch
There is no restaurant or trattoria along the way, so I advise to take a bag lunch. At the highest point of the route, you will find a place to make a nice picnic.
This time we took couscous with vegetables, package of almonds and chocolate bar. The way is not easy, and having some energy food is essential 🙂
Download the map of Italy. I would recommend application mapy.cz. The application includes many hiking routes and it has nice design.
You will need a car.
Avg. travel time: 2 hours.
GPS: 46.2668108N, 12.9975814E
Monte Cuar: way to the top.
The route begins with an asphalt road. Be careful passing through it: you can easily step on salamander 🙂
First half of the route is not easy: almost all the time you had to rise, and some parts of the track are steep enough.
One of charming moments of the path is heather that you can meet everywhere in springtime. In combination with big stones, moss and dry leaves, this flower looks fascinating.
As I have mentioned, the weather was cloudy, but it gave particular charm to the landscape. One of my friend compared the nature, surrounded us that day, with typical Scottish landscapes.
Picnic in the fog and the way back.
At the top of the path, we made a picnic in the fog 🙂
You will easily identify this place by this construction with the bell.
There was chilly and humid on the top to stay long; hence, we continued our way, having started to descend.
I have to tell that also descent of the route was not easy. Quite steep and slippery path didn’t allow to go fast. All of us fell down at least one time, but luckily, nobody was injured 🙂
However, the path was passing through the forest, which looked mystically and thus was especially attractive.
Having finished the track, we discovered that the path we had chosen for the descent was not used any more.
I think we were mistaken having started to descend, but it was easy to do due to the mist and clouds 🙂 And we were not regret. The way down was nice and diverse, and slightly extreme. I would recommend choosing it. You will get tired, but for sure you will not get bored 🙂
San Daniele and its famous prosciutto.
Hiking track we made is located close to small city San Daniele, famous for its prosciutto (ham).
Prosciutto di Parma from in Emilia – Romania region and Prosciutto di San Daniele of Friuli – Venezia Giulia region.
On the way back to Trieste, we could not miss the chance to try one of most delicious Italian ham 🙂
There are many places in the city you can try Prosciutto di San Daniele. We chose randomly Bar IL Michelaccio:
Prosciutto and wine were delicious; the atmosphere at the bar was warm and cozy that was especially appreciated after nice, but cold and humid walk 🙂
Everybody who tried Prosciutto di San Daniele notices its delicate taste. Producers tell the secret is that it contains very little fat.
Traditionally Italians eat their famous ham with grissini – kind of bread sticks – wrapping them by Prosciutto. I have to say it’s really tasty!
If you decide to visit this bar, I would also recommend ordering mix of cheeses served with sweet mustard. The taste is amazing! Unfortunately, I couldn’t make a picture. The plate with cheese disappeared quick as a wink 🙂
