Today we decided to repeat one of our favorite hike near Trieste famous for its amazing views over the Gulf of Trieste and the city. The route will pass through the Carso Triestino plateau. It is worth mentioning that Carso offers many routes for hiking and biking. I have already described some of them including the one that passes in Val Rosandra natural reserve. The route we chose for today hiking is less popular, but not less beautiful and exploring.
- Gigantic trees in Park Farneto
- Beautiful and a bit wild forest
- Panoramic views over Trieste and the sea
- A lot of persimmon trees
- Trattoria with local food and wine
- Hiking boots
- Water and / or hot tea
- Snack (bananas, apples, nuts)
- Download the map of Italy.
- Buy bus tickets. You can find them in Tabaccheria, newsstand or bar.
Trieste – Park Farneto – Carso Triestino
Initial point of our hike is famous pedestrian street of Trieste – viale XX Settembre. And here, I invite you to join one of our tradition: having a cup of coffee before the long walk 🙂
There are a lot of bars and coffee shops on Viale, but I recommend you to drop at Bar Politema (viale XX Settembre, 34) that is located not so far from the famous Rossetti theatre. There you will not find exquisite interior, but owners make really good coffee. If you are lucky, you will be able to order fresh croissant. Hot and delicious they are finished very quickly 🙂
After drinking our traditional cup of coffee, we start to hike. The first part of the route passes through the park Farneto. You can reach it by walking up the street Via Ippolito Pindemonte, which is located at the end of viale XX Settembre.
Farneto is big enough park at the center of Trieste with nice paths, small bridges and unusual gigantic trees, against which even a tall person looks small.
By the way, exactly near these gigantic trees you can find direction sign that indicates further route.
Leaving the park Farneto we hike towards to park Globojner located in Carso Triestino. I’ve marked our track on the map.
If you make this route in autumn – winter season you will find many persimmon trees on your way that invite you to try their fruits 🙂
I have to say that this hike near Trieste includes some ascents, but they alternate with places to stop. For example, after the first climb leading to the park Globojner, you will find a nice bench to have a rest.
Hike near Trieste, part two: panoramic views
After a short break, we hike toward to Vedetta Alice – view point where you can get a nice photo. The road mainly rises up, that is not easy, but you will forget about it immediately ones you reach the observation point that expects you on the top.
Trieste and endless sea spread out before you.
Having enjoyed the views, we are moving in the direction of Campeggio Obelisco – Camping in Carso area, located near Opicina. Just follow the itinerary #1 marked on the map.
The way is pretty long, but easy, as there are almost no climbs. We pass through the forest, which does not look nice at this time of the year, but it is very peaceful and quiet.
If you are lucky, you can met roe deer in the forest. Wild boars are also “residents” of this area 🙂
One the way to Campeggio Obelisco there are some more observation points with panoramic views. From one of them you can even see Slovenia and a piece of Chroatia.
Continuing hike, we soon reach nice stairs – the sign that we are very close to our final destination and the place of a good lunch 🙂
Lunch in local trattoria and comeback to Trieste
Having reached Campeggio Obelisco we have lunch in trattoria Ristobar Campeggio Obelisco (Strada Nuova Per Opicina 37).
Trattoria is located at the entrance of camping and it has unpresentable look, I would say. But the atmosphere inside is homelike, with real fireplace (that is especially nice in the winter), good food and wine. You will also be nicely surprised with the prices 🙂
Following Italian tradition, the kitchen can be closed from 14:30 till 19:00.
To reach Trieste from Campeggio Obelisco you can take the bus #2 or #4. You will find the bus stop not so far from the trattoria (Opicina, via Nazionale Campo Romano).
Hike with panoramic views is one of the best located in Trieste area and I highly recommend it in case you are in Trieste.
