One of the most famous hiking places near Trieste (and one of my favorite) is natural reserve Val Rosandra. It is beautiful in any season. And another detail I like a lot about this reserve, is a variety of offered trails: from very easy (for those who want to relax and enjoy the nature) to more complex, including rises and long-distance walks.
This time we chose the easy one 🙂 , but decided to combine it with the walk on The Giordano Cottur Walking / cycling path (ex Ferrovia vecchia).
- Hiking boots
Doing this walk, you will find some nice places, where to have a rest and eat, but if you prefer to take bag lunch, there are also places on the route where you can organize small picnic.
- Download the map of Italy.
- Buy bus tickets. You can find them in Tabaccheria, newsstand or bar.
. The bus runs not often, and I would recommend you to check the schedule in advance on the official website of Trieste public transport.
Bagnoli della Rosandra – Bottazzo.
Passing through Bagnoli, we enter in the valley Val Rosandra and continue,
The way is simple. We are just walking and enjoying the views.
This is Val Rosandra waterfall. It is not big, but always nice, even when there is no much water.
Passing over the bridge, we reach small village Bottazzo and it’s trattoria. There is only one trattoria in the village; for sure, you will not miss it 🙂
To the left of the Trattoria you will see barrier, painted in white, blue and red, and a small building intended to border guards. Exactly at this place, the border between Italy and ex Jugoslavia was passing.
Lunch in Trattoria Bottazzo
We like a lot this place. It is very simple trattoria, but with its own charisma. Right near the entrance, you will see this stand, where it is written that trattoria is open from 10 a.m. till the sunset 🙂
In a warm season, we take a table outside, in a small garden with big trees.
Here you always can order hot dishes as gnocchi with goulash, grilled vegetables or jota – typical soup of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Slovenia cuisine. Traditional Italian antipasti like cold cuts (affitati misti) and cheese (piatto di formaggi) are also available.
And for those who like the sweets, I would recommend to try pasta crema – typical Friuli-Venezia Giulia dessert, made from puff pastry and delicate vanilla cream. This time I couldn’t resist!
I would recommend taking beer – trattoria has variety of Slovenian good beer.
Worth mentioning that quality of food is good and prices are reasonable.
Bottazzo – The Giordano Cottur walking / cycling path
We will proceed our hike on walking / cycling path, but I’d like to mention that there is an option to come back to Bagnoli same route and take the buses #40, 41 to return to Trieste.
After a nice lunch, we continue the walk rising up to The Giordano Cottur walking / cycling path. We chose the way indicated on the map: right behind Trattoria you will find the path leading to the top. The path is a bit difficult (especially after lunch 🙂 ), but on the way there is nice vista point with the view over the valley.
This time we were lucky to meet here wild goats. Usually they don’t come so close.
Walking / cycling path connects Trieste and Slovenia. It is popular trail among cyclists from both countries. And one of favorite places of hikers.
Until year 1961, there was railway connected Trieste and Slovenian station Hrpeljen. The second, not official name of this path, is Ferrovia vecchia (old railway).
We chose this road as our way back as it is nice, simple and various.
Walking on ex Ferrovia vecchia you will find many tunnels, cut in the rocks.
And one of my favorite with the lights.
If you want to make small picnic, there are also tables with comfortable benches.
Walking / cycling path- Trieste
On the final stage of our route we pass near small village San Giuseppe della Chiusa, where is located Osmiza of the same name – a place where you can try products (eggs, ham, cheese wine, etc.) of own production.
Pay attention on this sign, which is typical Osmiza sign:
We didn’t go there this time, but I recommend you to visit it, especially if you never have been in Osmiza.
We finish our hike at the initial point of the Walking / cycling path (ex Ferrovia vecchia) which is located near San Giacomo. If you need to go to the center of the city, you
But there is a in case if you don’t want to walk until initial point.
